ProtiSpar is a feed additive that helps cows improve their protein utilization and reduce feed costs. To the advantage of both the cow, the farmer, and the environment.
-ProtiSpar inhibits the bacteria in the rumen that break down protein into ammonia, says Erika Nyström, Product Manager Cattle Feed. The production of volatile fatty acids is not hampered. Thanks to this, more protein and intact amino acids from the feed will pass on to the intestine, where the cow will benefit more. In this way, the need to feed, often expensive, rumen-stable protein is reduced.
ProtiSpar can improve the economy by increasing protein utilization. At the same time, it saves energy for the cow since she does not need to convert as much ammonia in the liver into urea. This not only increases feed efficiency but also reduces the evaporation of ammonia from urine in the barn, to the advantage of the environment.
Two strategies with ProtiSpar
There are two strategies for feeding ProtiSpar. In feed states with low levels of rumen-stable protein (AAT) but an excess of easily digestible protein (PBV), ProtiSpar can be added to increase milk production. This is because ProtiSpar helps the cow convert easily digestible protein into rumen-stable protein.
The second strategy is to reduce protein feeding by about 0.5 kg protein feed, continues Erika. Then you can get a cheaper feed state with maintained milk production. Something important to consider is that the energy supply must always be balanced and that there must be enough easily digestible protein in the diet when adding ProtiSpar. The urea in the milk should thus not be too low in the initial state.
Both trials and extensive practical experience have shown that we can improve protein utilization in the rumen with an addition of ProtiSpar.
